Blog Post #9

My first thought about science was I never really liked it because I always seen it as using chemicals, something like math with different numbers and problem solving. But now I see it totally different. There is different ways to learn about science for example learning about robots, and human cloning. Many of my paper's that I wrote about was based on human cloning. Also, many of the course pack readings were based on robots and future technology. My views have changed while reading about human cloning because now I actually have an opinion about it. Now I believe that human cloning is unethical. While reading Carly Churchill's "A Number" you can get a sense of how the future of human cloning may go.  A quote by the author states "and they take this painless scrape this specky little cells of me and kept that and you threw the rest of me away"(Churchill 162). This quote shows how easy the cloning may be in the future and this is very sad because anyone can be cloned. Before I read all of these stories about future technology I new really knew that people care about human cloning. I thought that people just advanced computer's and different things like that. Now there is different types of robots and they can talk dance, and recognize different objects it is kind of scarey. Using these different types of stories thought me how to use quote sandwiches and cite much better. I can really take all of the information I have learned and apply it to different classes I take in the future. I didn't really have challenges it was more of fallowing instructions and knowing what my professor was expecting from me. I had a great experience in all my classes and I can't wait to take my other classes and learn more and different things that I didn't know before.

Blog Post #7 . . What Can Stories Teach Us About Science?

In Caryl Churchill's ,"A Number" this play shows the unethical consequences that can come from human cloning. In the play one of the main character's named Salter clones his son who he ironically can't stand, to make up for all the bad he had done to his son. But his cloned son who is named Bernard 2 find out and is very upset with his father. Then, Bernard 1 confront his father, and tells his about his horrible life he had suffered dealing with his drug addiction. The author states "and they take this painless scrape this specky little cells of me and kept that and you threw the rest of me away"(Churchill 162). This quote shows how easy it is to clone a human in the future all you need is a small sample of a cell. I had two questions through out this hole story and it was, is cloning ethical? From this story I do not believe that cloning is ethical. I do believe that it can harm families because of scientist selfish views. The other question I had is if you clone children how would scientist know if that's what they wanted?. From that question I can see that children will never have an opinion or a choice. I believe that is sad and should be banned to clone children. Also killing clones or abandoning them wont help all the problems this world already has. I believe if scientist really read certain texts that they will see both sides. They don't have to go against what they believe but they will at least think twice about certain choices.

ENG 103 Final Draft Planning . .

I have received my research paper draft and after reading Pro.Dragan's comments I will like improve on a couple of things. The places that I would like to improve on is getting two miscellaneous videos on cloning. I will be looking at videos on youtube. I will also be using a course pack reading to help me as well. I also need to make a stronger connect to my sources and thesis statement. I also need a book review from "LexisNexis". This draft really help me see that I need to improve on my research paper. Also, I need a few more pages on my topic.

Blog Post #6

In David Gelernter's " Dream-Logic, the Internet and Artificial Thoughts" he writes about many of his pessimistic views about robots one day becoming more intelligent them humans. The author states "The thinker inhabits his thoughts. No computer will be able to think like a man unless it, too inhabits its thoughts" (Gelernter 203). What Gelernter is trying to say is that computers are programed to know certain type of information and humans have to program the computers. So whatever the computers know humans will already know in advanced. Another quote that the author uses is "No computer will be creative unless it can simulate all the nuances of human emotion" (Gelernter 205). Gelernter is trying to say that computers will never be like humans because they will never be able to show creativity.

In a clip from one of my classes we were introduced to a robot called Watson. This is a robot that can access information from different search engines and answer questions that you ask it. In the clip I have seen Watson was on a game show called Jeopardy. Jeopardy is a game show that gives you answers to a question. But you have to say the question. The robot won against two humans. Yes I do agree that technology will be very advanced in the future but, a computer will always need a human to program it to get that information. Also if Watson did not win I am pretty sure that he would not feel sad or disappointed as much as his creators will be.

Blog Post # 5

I am very pessimistic about robots one day becoming smarter then human beings. In the readings from our course pack we read about a man named David Gelernter and his pessimistic views on future robot technology. In his argumentative essay "Dream-Logic" he states ". . they are blended together. The thinker inhabits his thoughts. No computer will be able to think like a man unless it, too can inhabit its thoughts" (Gelernter 203). I agree with this statement because I do believe that the only way a robot can become smarter then some humans it must be programed that way. In this society we program our computers to think more like us. If so many people are worried about our future don't keep wanting more and more from a computer. We already see them taking over human jobs. What can be next? I do agree that some robots with be helpful for the future but as far as to become smarter then us I do not agree. Another statement the author makes is "No computer will be creative unless it can simulate all the nuances of human emotion" (Gelernter 205). I also agree with this statement because this proves that without emotion a computer will never to be able to be smarter then us. They will not be able to have a conscious mind so therefore they will not be able to feel anything.
I am both a science and a humanities person I feel like writers can also think about science they can write about science as well. And science people can also use there writing and reading skills to do better research. I like to incorporate both when I am in some of my classes and I really like to learn about both rather then one inarticulate.

My Eng. 103 Rsearch Plan #1

My thesis statement for my research paper is :
I will argue that the portrayal of human cloning in Kazuo Ishiguro's "Never Let Me Go" accurately portrays some of the ethical problems surrounding human cloning.

Two sources I need to find or my research paper is extra sources such as a YouTube video or a Lexis Nexis, or Gale reference library. I really would like to find a video that I can watch since I'm reading a book.

Sample Paper Thoughts

Based on this sample paper I really liked that this person was organized. They also used great sources and they where reliable. They also used good quote sandwiches to introduce the quote, gave the quote, and then explained the quote. What I didn't like about this research paper is that they used "I" to much and their thesis was very wrong and was not clear on what they agreed or disagreed with. What I would take from this research paper is the organization that was used and the reliable sources. I wont not use "I" to much. I would also put a title on my paper just because it shows a sense of organization and it may help you with your thesis.
