Blog Post # 5

I am very pessimistic about robots one day becoming smarter then human beings. In the readings from our course pack we read about a man named David Gelernter and his pessimistic views on future robot technology. In his argumentative essay "Dream-Logic" he states ". . they are blended together. The thinker inhabits his thoughts. No computer will be able to think like a man unless it, too can inhabit its thoughts" (Gelernter 203). I agree with this statement because I do believe that the only way a robot can become smarter then some humans it must be programed that way. In this society we program our computers to think more like us. If so many people are worried about our future don't keep wanting more and more from a computer. We already see them taking over human jobs. What can be next? I do agree that some robots with be helpful for the future but as far as to become smarter then us I do not agree. Another statement the author makes is "No computer will be creative unless it can simulate all the nuances of human emotion" (Gelernter 205). I also agree with this statement because this proves that without emotion a computer will never to be able to be smarter then us. They will not be able to have a conscious mind so therefore they will not be able to feel anything.
I am both a science and a humanities person I feel like writers can also think about science they can write about science as well. And science people can also use there writing and reading skills to do better research. I like to incorporate both when I am in some of my classes and I really like to learn about both rather then one inarticulate.
